************************** DRAGON WARRIOR RANDOMIZER **************************
************************** **************************

This game is the original definition of a linear grind.

But now the line no longer has to be direct!

Venture forth brave hero and recover the Ball of Light!

(Spoiler: the Dragonlord still has it.)

(No I did not move it to the castle, nice try.)

[ 1. Two Ways to Run the Program ]

> a. From the command line: "DragonWarriorRandomizer <path to rom file>"

> b. Open dwr.bat in the same program you're using to read this file.
Change the filename and path to match your DW rom. (Default is dw1.nes)
Save, close, and double click the batch file to run it.

Either way, an optional seed may be provided after the filename. The seed may be
either a number or a string. (The ASCII values of each letter in the string will
be converted to a number which will then be used as the seed.) Using a fixed
seed will produce the same randomized ROM every time, which is important if you
need to coordinate with other players such as for a race. (Good luck.)

[ 2. What the Randomizer Does ]

When the randomizer is run it will ask you a few yes/no questions. Press the 'y'
key for yes and any other key for no. I recommend answering 'y' to every option
because all of them make the game easier and less of a grind.

> a. Would you like to improve enemy xp and gp values to match the remake?

In the various remakes of this game the enemies give greatly boosted XP and GP.
This option will set the xp and gp values of nearly every enemy to match those
values. Some enemies are capped at 255 xp due to a program limitation. The
Goldman is also capped at 255 gp.

> b. Would you like to lower inn prices to match the remake?

Original: 6, 25, 20, 55, 100
  Remake: 3, 6, 12, 24, 50

> c. Would you like to shuffle treasure chest contents?

There are 31 treasure chests in the game. This option will shuffle them all
randomly, but two promises will be kept:

- The Silver Harp, Staff of Rain, and Stones of Sunlight will not be moved
to any of the treasure chests in Charlock Castle.

- Of the two treasure chests in the game which contain a Magic Key, one of
them must be moved to the starting room. (Or else you wouldn't be able
  to get out!)

Yes, there is a small chance that King Lorik may give you Erdrick's Sword at the
start of the game. Or it may be in Erdrick's Cave! You might trade the Silver
Harp for a Torch!

> d. Would you like to shuffle which monsters appear in which areas?

Each quadrant of the world (see, the bridges) and each dungeon has its own set
of 5 monsters to choose from. This option will shuffle the monsters between the
encounter zones slightly. I assign each monster to a tier based roughly on their
level and difficulty to keep it fair. You won't see any Starwyverns outside of
Garinham, although you may see a Magidrakee outside of Tantegel Castle.

> e. Would you like to shuffle the overworld locations?

There are 14 destinations on the overworld:
  - The 2 castles: Tantegel and Charlock
  - The 6 towns: Brecconary, Garinham, Kol, Rimuldar, Cantlin, and Haukness
  - The 4 caves: Erdrick's Cave, Mountain Cave, and both ends of the Swamp Cave
  - The 2 shrines: Shrine of Rain and the Rainbow Shrine

This option randomizes all of them except the two castles. Randomizing Tantegel
could make the game unfair at the start and randomizing Charlock would negate
the need for the Rainbow Drop.

When this option is used it is promised that exactly one half of the Swamp Cave
will appear on the eastern continent. Otherwise Charlock and 3 more destinations
would be unreachable and the game would be unwinnable.

[ 3. Scrolls of Honor ]

Thank you Ryan8bit for your Formula Guide at gamefaqs.com. The disassembly within
helped me implement some of my features.

Thank you romhacking.net for additional notes regarding the Dragon Warrior ROM
that I also needed.

Thank you Super Metroid Randomizer, Zelda Randomizer, and starofviolence for
inspiring this randomizer. I hope you find a good, new XP grinding spot without
any StarJerkBirds in it.

[ 4. But Thou Must! ]

Version 1.1 - November 2015
 * No longer requires Microsoft Visual C++ debug dlls

Version 1.0 - September 2015
 *Initial Release

I probably will not update this program, but instead work on producing a new
randomizer which works on one of the vastly superior remakes.
